What is the SUT?
As a charitable learned society for marine science and technology, the SUT provides a range of resources and events designed to develop the learning and dissemination of ideas in the subsea community.
The SUT aims to bring members together in order to develop better techniques to explore and study oceans, promote proper economic and sociological uses of resources in and beneath oceans, as well as educate scientists, technologists and maintain a high standard of marine care.
The SUT does this by focussing on a number of key interests from diving and submersibles, marine policy and marine renewable energies to ocean resources, geotechnics, underwater robotics and subsea engineering. Through its Subsea Awareness training courses, the SUT facilitates learning and understanding of the key issues faced by the subsea industry and its stakeholders.
With the first board meeting held in 1970 by Lord Wakefield of Kendall House in the House of Lords, the SUT grew and saw branches pop up across the UK. With the SUT’s Educational Support Fund being launched in 1983 as well as the growth in popularity of its events and trainings, the SUT opened branches all around the world. In 2015, over 40% of SUT members were based outside of the UK.
EBC Middle East Managing Director Adrian Phillips is responsible for the opening and chairing of the SUT Middle East branch in 2019. With Middle East operations head quartered in Abu Dhabi, the SUT Middle East branch works with key offshore and subsea marine players, including the likes of McDermott, Saipem and Prsymian, to strengthen community ties and develop learning in the subsea industry.
The SUT runs a number of international events with the most recent Middle East event having taken place at the Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, hosted by chairman Adrian Phillips.
On the event, Adrian Phillips explains how ‘the SUT Middle East branch is growing in membership and provides the perfect opportunity for subsea and offshore professionals to network and discover growth opportunities.’
